International Competitions: Our claims to fame
International Schools Cyberfair The International Schools CyberFair is a prestigious website-designing competition with participating teams from educational institutions worldwide. This award-winning, annual competition is currently in its twelfth year and has involved more than one million students from 4,500 schools across 100 countries – it is considered the longest running international education cyber-event of its kind.
Let’s applaud Infocomm Club@Raffles Institution for being the only team in Singapore to secure the highest-ranked Platinum Award for this prestigious website-designing competition. It was no easy feat being matched against participants from worldwide institutions to conduct research on topics of general interest such as music, art, even local leaders, and publish their findings on the internet.
More than just a competition, this award-winning learning programme encourages students to foster cultural exchange among students from all over the world by becoming community ambassadors.
The Infocomm Club effectively trained the students in all aspects required to create the website. The basic web-designing programmes such as Adobe Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and PHP were complemented with project management and networking skills, all of which enabled the whole club to work together as one.
Infocomm Club@Raffles Institution’s CyberFair project was about Singapore – about our country’s culture and way of life. It was created in the hope of educating the rest of the world on the many unique characteristics of our country. Their submission included interactive multimedia animation and games to help viewers get in touch and connected with our local culture in a fun and interesting manner.
By entering the competition, the students enriched themselves with skills and knowledge that they could not find in their classrooms. To see the fruit of their labour, check out their work at http://www.aerokinesis.com/cf2006/

National Competitions: The best in Singapore compete for glory
Computron Visual Design Competition Congratulations to Chan Wei Jian for bringing glory to Raffles Institution! He beat opponents from various tertiary and secondary schools to emerge top in designing a poster themed ‘Clash of the Titans’.
When asked to comment on his experience, he said: “Training provided me skills required for designing using Photoshop. Also, sharing with friends in infocomm allowed me to broaden my creative horizons and be exposed to many different and unique styles of design.” This competition was hosted by the National University of Singapore in June 2006.

School Projects: Assignments with a Twist Podcast and iMovieLike using new powers, our students from Infocomm Club@Punggol Secondary School used their newly acquired infocomm skills to assist their language-learning journey. Tasked to broadcast a school event in their mother tongue, their work was captured via Podcasting, and with enhancements from Garage Band, they were able to upload their final project onto iTunes for other students to download. Through this process, they not only applied their infocomm skills, but also got to take their presentation and linguistic skills to a higher level. Despite it being a regular graded school assignment, the incorporation of infocomm skills instilled excitement and whole-hearted participation in the students. Claymation – Theme Littering
To show their love for Singapore, our students from Infocomm Club@Bedok Green Primary School used their storyboarding skills to craft a script about anti-littering entitled “Claymation – Theme Littering”. These were then made into two short videos using iStopMotion and the editing software iMovie. After watching these videos, their fellow classmates were more aware of the environmental responsibilities they had to bear. Web Publishing Skills
Our students from Infocomm Club@St Andrew’s Secondary School had a challenging start when they were pitched against each other in a friendly web banner competition. Through careful planning and learning to work as a team, they soon overcame the hurdles and focused on using their newly taught HTML and photo editing skills to create some very impressive and professional banners and websites using HTML editing software Macromedia Dreamweaver and image editing software Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks. The project gave students from St Andrew’s Secondary School the opportunity to apply and demonstrate their IT skills and creativity, as well as learn new skills. It also taught them the importance of forward planning and strengthened the bonds among students, making them better prepared to take part in future competitions.
Some of the banners designed and created by the students.

Community Projects: Creative Kindness Our Secondary 1 members of Infocomm Club@Raffles Institution put their infocomm skills to good use in doing their part for the community. After a briefing by the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) on the services provided, they were guided by senior members to produce more comprehensive teaching materials for youths with Down Syndrome, to teach them various topics like counting money, social etiquette and survival skills, just to name a few.
To make the teaching materials more interesting, the team used the skills they learnt during FLASH training provided by the Infocomm Clubs to develop the animation, action-scripting and creative design of the whole project. They were given the freedom to design their work as they liked so they could learn through trial and error.

Field Trips: Letting creativity flow outside the classroom
With their digital cameras in tow and a presentation project in mind, our members from Infocomm Club@Methodist Girls’ Primary School took on an adventure field trip to Sentosa. As presentations are no longer a ‘show-and-tell’ genre in this school, our girls used their newly acquired ComicLife skills to piece together stories of their trip in true comic style, with witty dialogue to boot! Now trip reports will never be the same again!

Workshops: Expanding our knowledge In a bid to constantly improve ourselves and expand our knowledge, various workshops were organised. Attended by both students and teachers alike, the learnings and insights provided all with a clear picture on the impact of infocomm.
SMU’s June Holiday Workshop This intensive but exciting workshop kept our club members busy during the June holidays, resulting in them appreciating infocomm even more. Organised by SMU students (who became mentors to our club members), the programmes covered included Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Elements, Web Development and Open Source.
Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Elements taught our club members how to do create their own video and edit it, while Visual Web Developer Express was useful in helping them create more interactive webpages. They even got to learn more about Open Source and how to use the software to set up personal blogs, business or community platforms. Indeed, it was a holiday well spent!
Visit to Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore Our students were treated to an outing at IDA’s Proof-of-Concept Lab where they experimented with nascent and strategic technologies that are still at its pre-implementation stage. They also learnt about infocomm security and received attractive prizes through our games and quiz segments. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly and this is what some had to say:
Suvinral Pillai, Infocomm Club@Serangoon Secondary School said: “Should have more workshops like this.” Frederick Yip, Infocomm Club@Anderson Secondary School, “Best game session since.”
Teachers’ Technology Workshop Teachers traded in their red pens to take on the role of students during the Infocomm Clubs’ Teacher Technology Workshop, where they were treated to an overview of the wide spectrum of focus areas offered by the Infocomm Clubs Programme. “The presentation on Open Source is excellent with many learning points. I will definitely try to start an interest group,” said Paul Leong, Infocomm Club@Maris Stella High School.
The workshop included training in areas such as Networking, iStopMotion and FLASH. Some teachers even chose to try out for themselves, the programmes that were to be taught to their schools to better understand their students’ learning experience during Infocomm Club training. “This workshop helps the teachers have a quick preview of what courses are available. Thus it enables them to plan better,” says Tan Hui Teng, Education Technology Division, Ministry of Education.
At the end of this three day complimentary workshop, teachers brought home their own little projects, which we are sure they are proud to share with their own students!
