Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is set up in collaboration with MIT, USA, and in cooperation with Zhejiang University, China, to advance knowledge and nurture future leaders and innovators to serve societal needs. This will be accomplished, with a focus on Design, through an integrated multi-disciplinary curriculum and research.
The Big 'D'
At SUTD, design as a discipline cuts across the curriculum and provides a novel framework for the research and educational programmes. SUTD provides a holistic education that includes strong grounding in design, what we call Big 'D' Design, including process design, architectural deign, product design, software design and systems design - design of essentially anything imagineable.
Learning Communities
SUTD's curriculum will be taught through a unique pedagogy. It starts with students organised around small group learning communities that will provide more intimate connections with faculty and one another while learning from each other.
Courses Offered:
At SUTD, students choose from one of four focus areas (pillars) after undergoing a common curriculum for 3 semesters:
Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD)
The ASD pillar considers architecture, as well as urban development more broadly, with a strong engineering emphasis related to performance and efficiency, systems perspectives and management environmental consciousness, and advanced design methodology.
Engineering and Product Development (EPD)
The EPD pillar focuses on the conception, design, implementation and operation of technology-intensive products; particular emphasis is on products whose development cuts across many field and traditional disciplinary/department boundaries.
Engineering Systems and Design (ESD)
The ESD pillar addresses the modelling, design, optimisation and management of large, complex engineering and engineered systems whose function and performance depends on both the underlying technologies and on the socio-economic operational context.
Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD)
The ISTD pillar considers 'Information Technology' (IT) broadly - from computer systems through artificial intelligence to software engineering - particular emphasis on how information systems interact with the embedding context: sensing, control and human interfaces wll all play a major role.
