Trip to Singtel
by Bradford Loh Kin Wai, NUS High School of Mathematics and Science
To the layman, SingTel is merely a telecommunications service provider. However, we discovered that their telecommunications service is only a fraction of their total revenue. Inf act, their revenue comes from multiple solutions they provide to various industries and businesses, such as healthcare, education, and so on.
For instance, in the healthcare industry, one of the solutions they had developed was a centralized system that cointains patients' information, including MRIs and X-rays, which can be accessed by any healthcare institution, thereby enabling healthcare services in Singapore to be far more efficient.
Being students, what struck us most however would have to be SingTel's developments in the field of education. For instance, they had collaborated with various companies to develop a unique and interesting virtual learning environment that effectively immerses students in whatever they are studying. For example, if a student is studying biology, he can enter a room and a virtual pond will then be projected around him. He will then be able to interact with the various objects and organisms in the pond and get to learn about these creatures in greater depth. As students, we will most certainly love to see this technology being implemented on a greater scale.
As you can see, SingTel is far more than merely being a
telecommunications service provider. In fact, only a fraction of time during our tour was spent looking at SingTel's telecommunications solutions. Instead, we had the opportunity to see their other areas of development which gave us a greater insight into the work SingTel does and how their other developments impact our lives without us even realizing it!
After the tour, one of the employees working at SingTel spoke to us at great length about her own personal experiences working at SingTel. She recounted noteworthy events and people she encountered during her career, reasons why she joined SingTel in the first place, and what working at a company like Singtel is like. She offered refreshing and enlightening knowledge on what it is like in the constantly growing infocomm industry.
