Keeping in Touch If you have a laptop, a cost-effective way of keeping in touch is through instant messaging and internet telephony software. Many of these software are free and most university accomodations have internet access. You can also purchase international calling cards. Depending on where you are headed to, these can be cheaper or more expensive than those sold locally.
After you Arrive Get lots of rest and hydration during your flight, and orient yourself to the new time zone. Take things easy for a few days after you arrive to acclimatise yourself to the new envrionment.
Do your research. Get an understanding of the history and culture of the country and locality that you will be living in. In your free time, explore your surroundings to get a sense of belonging. Make friends, either with your colleagues or your fellow students.
Most importantly, have an open mind.
Money Matters Open a bank account at your destination before you arrive. Make sure that you have enough cash or other means of accessing money to last you for the first two weeks.
Budget your expenditure, and set aside some money for emergencies. Be disciplined, and your allowance will go a long way.
